Gardening 2009

Why are we planting a square foot garden?

Wednesday, April 01, 2009 4:29:20 PM

I am always looking for ways to spend quality time with my family, it is one of my “50,000 foot Getting-Things-Done life goals”. I was hearing great success stories about this gardening method from other members of our church. I have never planted a garden in the past, but when my kids were at another families house last year and they thought it was the greatest thing to pick cherry tomatoes and peppers from a plant I decided it is time for me to join in the fun.

I turned this project into a learning experience as well. I have involved my kids at all stages of this process. I told them if they maintain the garden throughout the year, I will buy back from them the vegetables they grow. A portion will be tithed, a portion will be used to pay off the construction costs, a portion will be saved and of course a portion to be spent as they see fit.

Square foot gardening is a scientific gardening method developed by Mel Bartholomew in the early 80s. This Wikipedia article describes the benefits of this gardening method over your typical garden as being:

• Much less work
• Water Savings
• Very little weeding
• Pesticide / Herbicide Free
• Accessibility

Mel’s website has a lot of good information, and you can preview the book at Google’s Book Search.

Jacob, RaeAnna and I completed our 40"x10" seedling shelf.  We had most of the lumber around our house.  We drilled 72 2¼  inch holes to hold the cups, painted the shelf and planted our seeds.

We planted: Tomato (Cherry), Pepper, Radish, Dill, Swiss Chard, Cucumber, Garden Bean, Pepper, Squash, Lettuce, Pea, Onion, Lettuce, Cauliflower, Pepper, Wildflowers.
